NBA Players and Tollywood Heroes
(Is the next blog entry "Cricket stars and NBA stars?")
While we were spending endless hours setting fantasy teams and watching gult (for the laymen, it is "telugu") movies, we started drawing parallels between both stars. It makes for a fun conversation.. Here you go..

NTR (viswa vikhyAta natasArvabhOuma nataratna doctor nandamUri tAraka rAmA rao gAru)
- Michael Jordan.
The one and only - no questions asked..
Jordan needs to prove himself in front office though.. NTR already did it as both actor and politician (really, front office)..

ANR - Karl Malone
Never the No.1, but tantalisingly close always..

Chiranjeevi - Kobe
Chiru's movies release in several centers, Kobe takes several shots (more avenues really)
Chiru spends a lot and gets a lot of money for producers. Same for Kobe.
Chiru's movies even outside Andhra are houseful. Kobe's games are sold-out anywhere.
No wonder, those two are my favorites :)

Balakrishna - Today's Shaq.
Aside from the obvious physical similarities ....
Balakrishna had good years before.. Same with Shaq..
Fans are nostalgic for both..
One key contrast that occurred to me: Balayya was accused of shooting someone.. Shaq wants to be a cop..

Nagarjuna - Grant Hill
Crests and Troughs through the career.. Blinding possibilities.. yet mediocre at the end..

Venkatesh - Ray Allen
Two dimensional, yet delivers in those dimensions more often than not.

Mahesh Babu - Baron Davis
Injuries/Flops screws the entire team.
If they play well, it is a blockbuster..

NTR Jr - Penny Hardaway
Rocking start.. Too bad later.. Knee injury for one, but fat injury to the other :)

mOhan bAbu (legend? celebrity?) Dikembe Mutombo
Ready to retire.. Moments of flashes recently.. Was #2 in a team with success..

brahmAnandam - Darrell Armstrong
Longevity, team player...

Possibilities:
Suman - Ron Artest
Rajasekhar - ??
Krishna - ??
Krishnam raju - ??

Comments:
Thanks to Sastry Konduri for some brilliant ideas that led to the above.

Well, I think you are down playing Nagarjuna a little bit. He is a more significant part of Tollywood than Grant Hill is of NBA.
Maybe Nagarjuna can be compared to Amare.

Darko Milicic = Ramakrishna (touted to be up there with the other stars, but far from that in reality)

Dennis Rodman = Amrish Puri (He acted in enough Telugu movies to get the credit). Maybe Satyanarayana for those extreme tollywood jingoists

Pippen = JD Chakravarthy (mostly a support character. Iffy success in the lead role)

Mark Cuban = Nagesh Kukunoor (change catalysts?)

Andrew Bynum = Padmanabham (long lost cousins? of different color)

Ron Artest looked familiar all these days... i think we even once commented him as a "gult hero"... suman is ron and ron is suman... nothing can change that...
